5 questions to ask your photographer before booking.

I know how overwhelming it can be to narrow down photographers for your wedding. You make a post to a Facebook group and within minutes the comments are flooded with photographers. Some of them may just be starting out while others, like myself, have years of experience. Which is why I want to give you a list of questions to ask your potential wedding photographers to help you decide which photographer is perfect for you.

1. Are you comfortable shooting in all lighting situations?

A lot of newer, less experienced photographers do not understand how to handle harsh light or low light. An experienced photographer will understand how to manipulate light and adjust their camera settings to fit the lighting situation.

My answer: With over 14 years of photography experience I can say with confidence that I am comfortable in any lighting situation.

 2. Can we see a full gallery?

You want to know what to expect from your photographer, right? So look at a full gallery! This helps to make sure the photographers style and vision align with your own so you’re not faced with any surprises when you receive your gallery.

My answer: Yes, always yes! All you have to do is ask!

3. How would you describe the way you shoot?

Do you want posed images or would you prefer prompts, free flowing, and candid? If you prefer the later I would suggest hiring someone that describes their shooting style as documentary.

My answer: I consider myself a documentary style photographer. I prefer documenting the day as it is with the occasional prompt.

4. Will my photos be backed up?

Your memories are SO important. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read in photography groups that a photographer has lost a clients images. It’s SO important that your memories are safe at all times.

My answer: My cameras have two card slots so I’m backing up your images between two cards as I shoot a wedding. I do not erase the images or format the card till your gallery is delivered. They are then placed in your gallery for 3 months. I also have a copy of your images on a hard drive that stays in my fireproof safe at all times. Years later, if you need a copy of your images I will have them.

5. When will we receive our photos?

I get it, we all get a bit anxious when it comes to getting our images back. Even as a photographer I get super excited to see my own images. Asking this question allows you to set the expectation between you and your photographer while also holding them accountable on delivery times.

My answer: I always send sneak peeks within 48 hours and return wedding galleries within 2 months although normally its less than 3 weeks. All portrait sessions are sent within 2 weeks.
